Highland Agronomy

 Indiana weather never ceases to amaze, summer has made an immediate arrival! The Agronomy Department is taking steps to make sure the course, staff, and members are prepared  for this unusual heat wave. We have adjusted hours for staffing on the real hot an humid days, coolers are being checked regularly for everyone out on the course and Ryan and Chris are closely monitoring turf quality. Sustainability is key, protecting the main asset so its performing for the remainder of the golf season is paramount! We thank them for their hard work, attention to detail, and all they do for Highland. Spring arrived and headed straight into Summer! It's awesome to see Members on the course and 1 Tee so full. With that being said, the Grounds Department has started working before dawn to start to prep the course for play. We are very excited with this year's staff and the production they provided thus far. We will be at full strength once we hit June with the addition of the college employees that will be joining us. As the season starts to get in full swing , we are in the process of wrapping up the bunker audit of sand. We have a few holes to go but the process has gone smooth and the finished product looks and plays amazing! With golf play ramping up please help us out. We want you to have a smooth run at the cup and we need your help in fixing ball marks as you make your way around.  Around the Club Spring is in the air if Mother Nature cooperates...                   The crew has been hard at work getting the course ready for Opening Day. The process of bunker sand audit is in full swing as well as prepping greens, tees, fairways, and rough for the season.              Course Care "Tip" When you play out of a bunker hazard please make sure you rake yourself out as well as rake the point of contact. This goes along way for your fellow golfer who plays the hole after you on giving them adequate playing conditions. Be on the look out for informational bulletins posted in and around the locker rooms and clubhouse on other golf course conditioning information! The weather is trying to turn but winter keeps hanging on. However, over the past few weeks we have been able to get out and finish a few projects!  The Champ tee on #6 has been enlarged, sodded, and improved sunlight and air movement due to limb pruning.   The forward tee on upper #11 has doubled in usable space and we reclaimed an old tee pad on lower #11; it still had an original yardage plate buried in the ground! These tees will allow for more tee placement, variety, and traffic relief from our increased levels of play.   Warmer temps and a dry stretch afforded the opportunity to begin basic preparations on putting surfaces.   They have been rolled twice, mowed once, and have been sprayed twice.  A spring fungal cleanup and precisely timed plant growth regulator for seed head suppression have been applied.  The later app is based on a measurement called Growing Degree Days as well as historical site knowledge.   Spring clean up...

 As we are heading down the home stretch of winter let's look back on what has been happening around the course in February! The Snow event that dropped 8.5" of snow at Highland As you enjoy the indoor facilities at the Academy - did you know we spend 15-20 hours a month in their grooming the putting green with drags and brooms?  This winter the staff has worked hard cleaning the fence lines down 52nd St. and Grandview Dr. to allow for more of an aesthetic look as you enter HGCC!  The staff is finishing up all equipment preventative maintenance, sharpening of mowers, and deep cleaning/waxing units before we hit the ground running here in the next month or so.
